Rubyfruit Jungle by Rita Mae Brown5/19/2023 Some of her words are so perfect that I can only repeat them here word for word: The particular version I own has a wonderful introduction by Rita Mae Brown herself, written in 2015. Rubyfruit Jungle was written in 1976, a breakthrough lesbian novel (though Brown herself would argue that this is a story about people in general, not a subsection of society) that has no doubt helped to shape modern queer literature. The only LGBT section I remember seeing in our island library were medical textbooks (and this was in the 90’s/00’s!) My god, how I could have done with this book when I was younger – but how out of the question it was at the time to get hold of queer literature (or anything on the periphery). I wanted to start this review with the words ‘Growing up gay is hard.’ And while every part of that is true, it’s not in the spirit of Rubyfruit Jungle, which celebrates a shrugging off of oppression, the adventure of self-discovery, and the shredding of labels and limits.

The dark is rising sequence books5/19/2023 The sequence captured the imagination of a generation of children, now aged fifty-something, but the books were by no means universally known: barely any of my friends knew about them. In the 1960s and 1970s when the five individual novels first came out – my editions are the slim 1980s Puffins with tight leading and a small font size, about a quarter the thickness of today’s fashion for fat paperbacks – they were simply children’s fiction, marketed alongside Nina Bawden, Roald Dahl and Stig of the Dump. If published today they would be classified as children’s / YA fantasy fiction. About 18 months ago I wrote about Susan Cooper’s five-novel sequence called The Dark Is Rising.

She became a model at Hattie Carnegie’s internationally famous dress shop on East Forty-Ninth Street. Soon Lucy moved into an atmosphere of gilded elegance. Harry the dirty dog 19565/18/2023 It was directed by Peter Matulavich and written by Gene Zion and Matulavich. In 1987, a live action short film based on the book was produced and released. Soon after, however, Harry hides the scrubbing brush under his bed. The family collectively gives the strange dog a bath, ultimately recognizing it to be Harry. His attempts to get his family to realize that it is him succeed only when he digs up the brush that he had earlier buried. When he returns home, Harry's family does not recognize him. Harry becomes very dirty after playing in the streets, at the railroad, and in the dog park to the extent that, covered in dirt, he becomes a black dog with white spots. Harry is a family dog with white fur and black spots who, disenchanted with taking baths, buries the bathtub scrubber and runs away from home. Based on a 2007 online poll, the National Education Association listed the book as one of its "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children." The story also spawned an animated short, which was released in 1997. Originally published in black and white in 1956 by Harper and Row, it was reprinted in 2002 with splashes of color added by the original artist. Harry the Dirty Dog is an American children's picture book written by Gene Zion and illustrated by Margaret Bloy Graham.

The Librarian by Salley Vickers5/18/2023 'Underneath the delightful patina of nostalgia for post-War England, there are stern and spiky questions about why we are allowing our children to be robbed of their heritage of story. Her mission is to fire the enthusiasm of the children of East Mole for reading. At a time when library services are being reduced all over Britain, Salley Vickerss new novel, The Librarian, inspired by a remarkable librarian whom she. Salley Vickers is the author of many novels.
