Fathoms by Rebecca Giggs5/24/2023 ![]() ![]() We travel to Japan to board whaling ships, examine the uncanny charisma of these magnificent mammals, and confront the plastic pollution now pervading their underwater environment. She takes us into the deeps to discover that one whale’s death can spark a great flourishing of creatures. In lively, inventive prose, she introduces us to whales so rare they have never been named she tells us of the astonishing variety found in whale sounds, and of whale ‘pop’ songs that sweep across hemispheres. In Fathoms: the world in the whale, Giggs blends natural history, philosophy, and science to explore these questions with clarity and hope. How do whales experience environmental change? Has our connection to these fabled animals been transformed by technology? What future awaits us, and them? And what does it mean to write about nature in the midst of an ecological crisis? When Rebecca Giggs encountered a humpback whale stranded on her local beach in Australia, she began to wonder how the lives of whales might shed light on the condition of our seas. ‘There is a kind of hauntedness in wild animals today: a spectre related to environmental change … Our fear is that the unseen spirits that move in them are ours. Carry On by Rainbow Rowell5/24/2023 ![]() ![]() When I’m referencing Harry Potter and other Chosen Ones in Carry On, I’m doing it very intentionally. That’s partly what I wanted to write about – the way Chosen One stories tread familiar ground. I knew all along that some themes would overlap. Life-sized.īecause the Simon Snow series takes a lot of inspiration from the Harry Potter novels, were you ever worried with Carry On that the series would overlap in themes? That you would inadvertently lift ideas? Their hopes and worries are very mundane. Even though this is a fantasy, the characters act like they’re in a realistic novel. You know, I just wrote them the way I do my other characters. ![]() In the World of Mages, where there’s a fantastical element to so much, how did you ground the characters? ![]() ![]() Your books are very character-driven and I think that is largely why they are so adored. I wanted to make that relationship canon. I especially wanted to write them falling in love. I’d written Simon and Baz through other characters in Fangirl – Cath and Gemma –and I really wanted to take a crack at their story. He just makes me laugh.) But – and this might sound strange – I hadn’t gotten to write them as myself. Also, I’d gotten a taste of their voices. ![]()

Liberal fascism by jonah goldberg5/23/2023 ![]() ![]() While Goldberg doesn’t spare those on the right when their worldview or actions stray into fascist territory, and near the end of the book admits that “we are all fascists now” (a provocative statement that may not make much sense unless you read through to that point), his explicit aim is to expose the historical roots of fascism on the left, and show how echoes of those roots remain with us in the politics and methods of liberal leaders in the present and recent past. The author’s sympathies are clearly with the right wing of American politics, and he candidly admits as much. This is not to say there’s nothing partisan about Liberal Fascism. ![]() This is not the literary clickbait it might appear to be at first glance, but actually a well-researched work that contains a lot of interesting information and provides an insightful and I think for the most part accurate synthesis of that information. If an Internet troll who decided to take his habit of posting annoying memes on social media sites were to take his efforts to the next level by writing and publishing a book, it might well look something like this!īut the old saying about not judging a book by its cover applies here, as I discovered when curiosity led me to begin reading it. It’s an inflammatory title, not helped by the lurid red book jacket highlighting a bright yellow smiley face with a Hitler mustache drawn on it. The full title of this book is Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left from Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning. ![]()

Hereafter by Tara Hudson5/23/2023 ![]() What did you think of the first novel in the series? D’you like it or it’s just “meh” for you? Plus, New Orleans? I’m immediately going to read this book! This is a series I’ve become a fan of and I can’t wait to see what happens to Amelia in this one, because it seems like she has some tough choices to make. Torn between two worlds, Amelia must choose carefully, before the evil spirits of the netherworld choose for her.ĪHH! It’s the second book to Hereafter!
